Elizabeth Hilton was born in West Boise, Idaho, in a time before the city reached that far — farmland, dusty roads, scattered neighborhoods, abandoned houses and barns. She was the fifth of six children and grew up spending summers building forts, wandering canals, and exploring a particularly decaying homesteader church near her house.
